Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is stored in the body. This is why, holistic health practitioner Dr Milan Singh, advises against taking a supplement without testing for deficiency. “It is not excreted, so the chances of toxicity are higher. This also applies to vitamins A, E, and K which are only to be taken in case of deficiency. These should only be taken when recommended. Anything beyond can lead to toxicity,” said Dr Singh.
So, like we usually do, we reached out to an expert to understand if it’s true considering many people tend to take supplements even without testing for them. Notably, vitamin D deficiency is important to address as low levels of vitamin D can cause weak bones, bone pain, and muscle weakness.
Currently, a large number of people aged 10-75 are struggling with vitamin D deficiency and are advised to take D3 supplements by their doctor. However, one should not take any supplements without testing. Doing so is a strict no-no, agreed Dr Aniket Mule, consultant internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.
“Taking too much vitamin D can lead to toxicity. One can suffer from symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, kidney failure, kidney stones, irregular heartbeat, confusion, and even death,” explained Dr Mule.

According to Dr Mule, vitamin D toxicity can also lead to hypercalcemia or high amount of calcium in the blood, causing signs such as bone pain, frequent urination, and even calcium deposits in the arteries or soft tissues. So, if you are taking any supplements, it should be strictly done under the guidance of an expert.
“Don’t start any supplement on your own just because your friend has suggested it. The doctor will advise what is best suitable for you and recommend a dosage. Get your vitamin D levels checked regularly,” said Dr Mule.
