What is longevity, and why are some of us so obsessed with it?

For many of us, time is currency. Most would love nothing more than to reach old age or perhaps even extend life expectancy to spend more time with loved ones, even if that means popping a handful of pills every morning, noon, and night.

Unfortunately, the numbers aren’t looking up — at least in the U.S., where the CDC has reported that life expectancy has dropped since the pandemic. As of 2022, women averaged around 80.2 years, and men are still struggling to close off the gap, aggregating roughly 74.8 trips around the sun.

The topic of longevity always seems to be well and alive in the news cycle; there’s always plenty of talk of medical advances in treating memory loss, social media trends like juice cleanses and fasting and cold plunging, research into what the ideal BMI is for longevity, and of course, the rapidly growing supplement industry.

Some celebrities are suspected of harboring well-kept insider secrets or undergoing cosmetic procedures. Others make their routines well-known, like Tech Mogul Bryan Johnson, who consistently makes headlines for going to monumental lengths with wild experiments, nothing short of replacing his plasma.

Despite attempts to reverse age, nobody seems to have cracked the exact code. However, some companies have been attempting to make the longevity movement mainstream, especially for men, who’ve historically trailed behind women.

The company offers thousands of supplements and vitamins geared for improving gut health, building muscle, balancing hormones, and, most recently, expanding its collection of anti-aging products that support longevity at a cellular level.

“Longevity is a very lively way to describe a long, thriving life. The preventative benefits and positive health outcomes of committing to a healthy lifestyle supports longevity,” said The Vitamin Shoppe’s Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist, Brittany Michels.

Cellular health products to support longevity grew by 45% last year at the retailer, according to the Vitamin Shoppe’s 2024 Health and Wellness Trends Report.

A few of the Vitamin Shoppe’s trending picks include NAC supplements that help protect cells from oxidative stress and inflammation, CoQ-10 to boost healthy energy levels, MitoQ Mitoquinol, which supports mitochondria function, and other NAD+ supplements to improve cellular metabolism.

“Incorporating the following supplements into your daily routine is one such way to commit to a longevity-promoting lifestyle,” suggested Michels.

Searches for ‘Vitamin Shoppe protein powder’ and ‘Vitamin Shop pre-workout’ remain popular, but the company wants to highlight the conversation going on around men’s health and more holistic categories, like hormonal balance, gut health, libido, and stress management, which all come with aging.

The brand is starting by putting more options on the shelves so men have more choices and knowledge when it comes to starting their health journey, no matter their age or health status.

Of course, multivitamins are still recommended, as are creatine, collagen, and whey protein for building muscle. But, The Vitamin Shoppe has also expanded its telehealth service to offer Testosterone Replacement Therapy via innovative KYZATREX capsules, an alternative to traditional injections and gels.

“The positive health outcomes of finetuning these essential men’s health categories and committing to a healthy lifestyle have been huge drivers in this wellness movement,” said Michels.

After all, the goal is not just a number but improving the quality of life — for men and women, no matter their life circumstances or economic status.

By offering a wide range of products geared towards overall health, the Vitamin Shoppe is working to make healthy aging possible for anyone, not just the A-listers.

Among the most popular anti-aging supplements today is the NAC supplement. This three-in-one formula promotes cellular health and immune health while also offering antioxidant support. It has an impressive five-star rating, and some customers say they have sworn by NAC for years. One key amino acid, L-cysteine, has even been heralded as a hangover cure.

For those focused on muscle growth and endurance, 100% pure creatine powder is the way to go. This formulation is free of gluten, sugar, salt, and preservatives. Local gym rats and hardcore athletes alike love this as a pre-workout staple.

Many people don’t receive a sufficient amount of collagen through their diets alone, especially when collagen levels start to drop as they age. Those seeking healthier hair, skin, and nails may consider boosting their collagen intake with a powder formula that comes in a wide variety of flavors.

As we age, the amount of energy that our cells produce declines. This can lead to oxidative stress and overall aging. Mitoquinol penetrates deep into the cells to enhance the cell’s powerhouse and boost cellular longevity and vitality.

Gut health has been another primary focus in wellness circles these days. This daily digestive support formula is packed with prebiotics and probiotics to support overall gut health and ease occasional bloating.
