Massachusetts’ largest biotech employer said in a state filing shared with the Business Journal on Friday that it would lay off workers at its Cambridge and Lexington sites.
For the third time this year, Takeda Pharmaceuticals Inc. has disclosed plans to lay off workers at its Cambridge and Lexington sites.
Massachusetts’ largest biotech employer said in a state filing shared with the Business Journal on Friday that these additional layoffs would impact 45 employees at its Cambridge sites and 34 employees based at its Lexington sites.
Takeda (NYSE: TAK) said the layoffs began in late September 2024 and could last through March 2025. The affected positions are based out of 125 Binney St., 40 Landsdowne St., 500 Kendall St., and 650 Kendall St. in Cambridge, as well as 45-55 Hayden Ave. and 300 Shire Way in Lexington.
“The final number of layoffs is not clear at this time, as it is dependent on the number of employees who accept redeployment opportunities,” the company said in its filing.
It's the third time this year that the drugmaker has notified the state it would be shedding jobs.
Back in May, the Business Journal reported that Takeda planned to lay off 641 employees in Massachusetts, including 495 in Cambridge and 146 in Lexington. Then a month later, Takeda said it expected to cut 189 more positions in Cambridge, as well as 31 positions in Lexington.
Takeda announced earlier this year that it would go through a “significant, multiyear efficiency program.”
A company spokesperson previously told the Business Journal that Takeda’s revamp will “require difficult choices when it comes to prioritization, including making some changes to roles over time, but we’re confident that this focus will enable us to create more long-term value for our patients, the global health care system and society.”
